In Garissa County, improved water infrastructure is helping strengthen livelihoods for refugees and host communities.
Implemented with support from UN Kenya through ILO, and funded by the Netherlands under the PROSPECTS programme, the initiative rehabilitated key water infrastructure using labour-based methods and trained Water Resource Operators to support long-term management.
The improved water access has helped boost camel milk production, creating new jobs and income opportunities. Through the Kasha Camel Milk Collection Centre, women are also strengthening their role in the camel milk value chain, improving hygiene standards and expanding access to markets.
By linking water access, skills, jobs and enterprise, the programme is helping communities in Garissa build more secure livelihoods and stronger local resilience.
