At Thika School for the Visually Impaired, learners are using LEGO Braille Bricks for the first time as part of Pamoja Tusome, an initiative designed to make Braille learning more engaging, practical and inclusive.
Implemented with support from UN Kenya through UNICEF, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Institute for Special Education and the LEGO Foundation, the programme promotes inclusive education and learning through play.
The initiative is starting in 10 schools across six counties, with teachers trained to support learners from pre-primary to Grade Three. At Thika School, teachers say the bricks are already helping learners engage more actively, including those who have struggled with reading and writing Braille.
By combining play, touch and classroom learning, LEGO Braille Bricks are helping children build confidence, improve early literacy and develop a stronger attitude towards learning Braille.
