Building an Inclusive Kenya: Disability Inclusion Status Report 2025
The Building an Inclusive Kenya: Disability Inclusion Status Report 2025 examines the social, institutional and economic barriers affecting persons with disabilities in Kenya. It uses behavioural science, macroeconomic analysis and consultations with persons with disabilities and other stakeholders to assess the country’s progress and identify opportunities for stronger inclusion.
The report estimates that exclusion could cost Kenya up to 6.95 per cent of its gross domestic product, equivalent to approximately KES 1 trillion, through lower productivity, unemployment and limited labour market participation. It also notes that targeted social protection programmes reduced the estimated poverty rate among persons with disabilities from 45.7 per cent in 2019 to 38 per cent in 2023, although this remains considerably higher than the national average.
The report recommends stronger policy coordination, inclusive employment, accessible services and infrastructure, improved disability data, greater investment in assistive and digital technologies and the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in decisions affecting them.
