Wawira Njiru, the founder of Food for Education, an organization that feeds over 33,000 children daily with nutritious, healthy meals has been awarded the UN Person of the Year
She was feted on UN Day marked on October 24, recognized for her leadership and personal sacrifices in ensuring thousands of meals are served daily so that children don’t go to school hungry.
While accepting her recognition, wawira said “With this award, we hope our work will continue to show the importance of school feeding program as well as highlight how every child needs a meal to learn” she said
It is estimated that 30% of children go to school every day without anything to eat and this may affect their learning outcomes. Food for Education provides nutritious and affordable meals to schools throughout the country, helping children reach their full potential as students in the process.
Wawira hopes to expand her program to several counties in Kenya and provide meals to 1 million children in the next 5 years
